RFID is only the beginning

Perhaps no single technological advancement has generated more simultaneous excitement and apprehension than Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Now into the controversy comes the forward-thinking and visionary voice of Claus Heinrich, who, with a cadre of business leaders and technology educators, steps through the door that RFID has provided and reveals the potential of Real World Awareness.

Synopsis

Heinrich (managment science, U. of Mannheim, Germany) has created this text for business executives and technologists as a framework, taxonomy, mental model, and outline of the changes that Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) will bring to business. He presents the technology behind RFID tags, smart cards, and sensors but more importantly frames the technology and what it means for business in what he calls Real World Awareness. He shows how the aviation industry exemplifies the model and what other businesses can learn from a study of its adaptation to technical, social, and political issues.
