School Library Journal

Gr 5-9-Thorough, excellent-quality titles. The first section of each volume describes the native cultures living in each area. Subsequent chapters are devoted to early settlers, including the English in North Carolina and Rhode Island and the Quakers in Pennsylvania. All three books take readers through the War for Independence and the events leading up to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Sidebars offer primary-source materials, including excerpts from charters, proclamations, speeches, and writings, and small sections profile prominent settlers. Maps are strategically placed and extremely clear. These titles are far more detailed than those in Raintree's "13 Colonies" series. First purchases for most public and school libraries.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
