Children's Literature

Various nationalities are illustrated with darling cheerful children and corresponding poetry. Many verses are attributed to "anonymous" or "traditional." The poem "Give Me the Sky" reads: "Give me the sky For a playground. Give me the sun For a ball. Give me the rainbow To skip with, And I'll never be naughty At all!" One of the pictures on the page shows a mischievous boy peeking around the moon. A Haiku titled "Motherless Sparrow" by Issa of Japan reads: "Come here to me and let's play together, little motherless sparrow." The picture shows a smiling Japanese girl sitting under an umbrella with a goose beside her and a young sparrow on her toe. Big raindrops fall around them. A border carries out the Japanese theme. Other poem titles are "Tickle Tickle," "I'm a Little Latke," and "Now Christmas Is Come." The last page shows various children asleep along with "Good night" in many languages. This collection of poems with the colorful illustrations of happy moments in childhood will charm parents and children alike. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

PreS-Gr 1

These 40 poems and songs offer children a taste of many different cultures. Most are anonymous or traditional nursery rhymes; a few are by English or American poets. The tone is light and joyous. Sweet illustrations of babies and toddlers engaged in playful activities depict the universality of children everywhere. Similar in style to Chorao's The Baby's Playtime Book (2006); The Baby's Book of Baby Animals (2004); The Baby's Lap Book (1990), and The Baby's Good Morning Book (1986, all Dutton), this is an appealing volume to share with preschoolers.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

Kirkus Reviews

The poems in this sampling of international verse originate from all over the globe, including countries such as Poland, Iran, France, China and the United States. The lively poems and songs are accompanied by Chorao's colorful paintings, which feature her trademark joyful, round-faced tots in a variety of dynamic scenarios and landscapes. A hodgepodge of child-friendly topics are addressed, from tickling and birthdays to elephants and the rain. Source notes would have been a nice addition, as the credits are somewhat inconsistent. Most verses are attributed to a country or continent, some list an author or are labeled anonymous or traditional, while another is an "old jingle," with no explanation provided for how the designation was made. Children may not get a clear picture of how these countries and places vary-the emphasis is more on the universal than the particular-but they will come away with the realization that children all around the world play, dance, appreciate flowers, look at the sky-and say goodnight (the illustration includes a translation in 18 languages).
