Overview

Stephenson (1903-59) was born of humble origins in the Northumbrian coalfield, and rose from obscurity to become Britain's most famous engineer during a period when such social mobility was unheard of. Contributors associated with the Newcomen Society (which studies the history of engineering and technology) and the Institution of Civil Engineers present a biography that addresses his crucial contribution to railways and to civil, structural, mechanical, and water engineering; and examines his involvement in railway promotion in the free-market climate of 19th-century Britain, and the political and business connections that garnered him great wealth and influence.
