Overview

Most of us take for granted the Earth's crust, the thin outer layer of the planet that forms the continents and ocean floors. Formed 4.5 billion years ago, and still moving and growing today, the crust of the Earth is made of a huge variety of rocks and minerals. This book explores and explains the world of rocks and minerals, beginning with a look at the structure of the Earth and the ways in which minerals are formed. Neil Grant then goes on to explain topics such as identifying minerals, volcanoes and lava, fossils, gems, building a rock collection, and the formation of coal and oil beneath the Earth's surface. With beautiful illustrations on every page, Rocks and Minerals is an educational and colorful guide to planet Earth.

Investigates the world of rocks and minerals, covering such topics as the earth's crust, the identification of minerals, and how rocks are changed by heat and pressure.

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice

All over the world, there are sites that have attracted rock and mineral collectors. Many of the sites have been damaged by the careless removal and collecting of samples. In learning about how different rock formations began, we need also learn how to protect these special places in our world that tell us how we have evolved. A glossary offers basic definitions and a keyword index in included. The table of contents has been color-coded to offer quick access to changing topics. However, this coding seems to have little relevance to any division of subjects as presented in the contents section. Each page contains a "Look Out For These" where readers are challenged to find different types of formations that are pictured and described. Although this is an informative guide, it does not have the appeal of the Eyewitness Handbooks. 1998 (orig.
