Intent on capturing the allure she felt for the rodeo queens of her childhood in Cheyenne, WY, photographer, editor, and writer Eisner has created a wonderfully colorful and kinetic portrait of a slice of Americana. The girls the title refers to are actually awesome and powerful young women hoping eventually to vie for the title of Miss Rodeo America. Eisner's 140 photographs, both color and black-and-white, depict these muscled beauties within the context of the rough-and-tumble rodeo culture, and through the images we see their serious engagement in a lifestyle that is at once glamorous and workaday. We see fans collecting signatures and contestants helping each other get ready and waiting, along with the ornately detailed costumes, horses, and other tools of the rodeo trade. The photographs themselves, large format and bleeding to edge of the pages, are energetic and informed and are made even more interesting by their often unconventional composition and texture.
