Overview
Full report on the 1980/81 excavations at the 'Roman Gates' site - north of the main east gate of the fortress at Caerleon. The excavations have provided details of the timber buildings of the early periods of the fortress; of changes in the layout as timber was replaced by stone; and of unexpected late Roman phases of building activity with military metalwork suggesting a longer use of the fortress than had been expected. Dark Age burials suggest that buildings were still standing in the seventh century. Substantial finds report with over 400 items of metalwork.Synopsis
