Gr 6-8-Following the series' format, this book opens with a 42-page introduction to the country's geography, history, government and economy, arts, and food. In the second section, "A Closer Look at Romania," the author focuses on a variety of topics of special interest in two-page segments. They include unusual geographic features, celebrations, the Roma, Dracula, ancient ruins, and the revolution of 1989. A final section explores Romania's relations with the U.S. and Canada. Vivid photographs give this book a vitality that is rarely matched by an often pedantic text that tends to be overloaded with unimportant details. For example, do readers really need to know the names of three little-used dialects? The caves of Romania are of great interest but listing the organizations that study caves seems unnecessary in a feature that is also heavy with a technical explanation of the Movile Cave's ecosystem. The term Most Favored Nation is used several times in the section on ties with the U.S., but although its meaning can be surmised a few pages later, it is not found in the glossary or adequately explained in context. Overall, this is a solid if stolid text, with the exception of a couple of editing errors. Terri Willis and Betty Carran's Romania (Children's, 2001) is a much more engaging read that has more and better maps.-Elizabeth Talbot, University of Illinois, Champaign Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
