An octet of favorite picture books now appears as board book editions. Wanderlust sends a rooster to the road, and loneliness leads him to take on traveling companions in the adventure-cum-counting book Rooster's Off to See the World by Eric Carle. The type may be small, to fit the format, but symbols in the corner of each spread help readers keep track of the travelers' growing number. (Jan.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Children's Literature

Mr. Rooster in all his splendor has decided that he wants to travel and see the world. It is a beautiful sunny day, but Rooster is feeling a bit lonely on his outing. When he meets two cats, he invites them to come along. They are delighted to do so, and the entourage adds two cats to the one rooster. As the story progresses, three frogs, four turtles and five fish are added to the group. Unfortunately, Rooster hasn't given any thought to food or shelter, and his newfound companions start to head back home as does our hungry, homesick Rooster. It is a delightful counting book from one to five and then backwards from five to one. Carle's collages are eye-catching. The little images in the upper page corners will assist kids with their counting. It is wonderful to set out on an adventure, but there is nothing so sweet as one's home.

One morning Rooster decides to set out on a journey to see the world. On his way, he meets two cats, three frogs, four turtles, and five fish who all wish to join him on his adventure. However, when it begins to get dark, all the animals start to wonder if it is such a good idea after all. Rooster has not thought about dinner and a warm place to sleep for himself and all his friends. One by one, the animals return home and Rooster is left alone. Finally, he too decides to return to his comfortable perch, eat a good meal, and be content to dream of seeing the world. As always, Carle's rich, bright collages are beautiful. However, in this package, the book is very tiny and the detail in some of the illustrations gets lost. The box contains a set of six rubber stamps with different animals on each one, an inkpad, the book, and a block of blank paper. 1997 (orig.
