Library Journal
Gr 4-8-A brief biography of New York City's controversial mayor who became a national hero after September 11, 2001. Bankston chronicles Giuliani's rise from a family that included loan sharks, felons, and blue-collar workers to become a partner in a prestigious law firm, coming into the public eye as a tough district attorney, and being elected mayor of New York City. Giuliani's marriages and unpopularity before September 11 are mentioned. The text is written in a choppy manner and some of the photographs are misplaced. One family portrait shows the mayor's ex-wife Donna and two children, while the text has him still married to Regina. While the book has some weaknesses, it could be useful where biographical information is needed for students who are reading below grade level. The format is open, with pull quotes or photos on almost every page, and the tone is encouraging and inspirational.
