Overview

This is a reprint of a previously published book. It deals with the life of Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul.

Synopsis

In his biography of media baron Murdoch, Tuccille (vice president, T. Rowe Price Investment Services) concentrates on Murdoch's business activities, chronicling how he built a newspaper and broadcast empire and a vast fortune for himself. The biography covers his entire life, but concentrates on the later years before the first 1989 edition of the text, here reprinted in paperbound format. Publishers Weekly

``Interviewing employees, competitors, friends and Murdoch himself, but relying heavily on financial-press quotes, Tuccille quietly chronicles the dazzling career of a peripatetic family man who, in business, he shows, is taciturn, workaholic and a monumentally high-stakes gambler well ahead of the game so far,'' said PW. (Jan.)

Library Journal

This biography of Murdoch paints a far more sympathetic picture of the media baron than other recent titles, including Thomas Kiernan's Citizen Murdoch ( LJ 10/15/86) and Michael Leapman's Arrogant Aussie ( LJ 6/15/85). Tuccille, author of Trump (Donald I. Fine, 1985) and Wall Street Blues ( LJ 6/1/88), includes details of ``scores of interviews with sources.'' Unfortunately, many editors, associates, writers, and friends spoke off the record and remain anonymous. Murdoch's holdings in the United States alone include TV Guide , the Boston Herald, the Star , Harper & Row, Fox Broadcasting, and WNYW-TV in New York. Those interested in ``the Citizen Kane of our time,'' his current dealings and dollar figures, and his impact on the mass media and sensationalistic press will find some intriguing tidbits here, and this certainly should be in mass communication and popular collections. But for the definitive, balanced portrait, look elsewhere.-- Jo Cates, Poynter Inst. for Media Studies, St. Petersburg, Fla.
