Editorials

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

A bold picture and a single word identify the animals that leap from the pages of this sturdy book. In addition, there is a four-line rhyming stanza that tells the reader or listener something about the animal depicted. Young children will easily spot the creatures and will be able to point to them or call out their names. Also in the series: Farmyard Animals, Polar Animals, and Rainforesti Animals.

Children's Literature - Summer Whiting

This compilation of poems by Jack Prelutsky, Miles Gibson, and Hilaire Belloc is sure to delight even the youngest reader. A wild safari is hiding amidst the pages. Animals are brought to life through rhyming verse and rhythm and will capture the attention of anyone who happens to come across this fabulous collection. Some words will be recognizable for those who are building a sight word vocabulary. This would also be appropriate for the upper grades during a poetry, geography or animal study. This compilation would make a great introduction to teaching rhyme scheme as the poems are short and typically follow a couple of patterns. Hess's illustrations are engaging and accurate and help to create imagery. The price is just right and would make a great addition to any classroom or personal collection. Reviewer: Summer Whiting
