Joshua Slocum (February 20, 1844 - on or shortly after 14 November 1909) was an American writer, seaman and adventurer. He was one of the first man to sail alone around the world. He disappeared in November 1909 while aboard his fishing boat that he had named the Spray.

Synopsis

Joshua Slocum was believed to be the first man to sail single-handed around the world. After a distinguished career, where he worked his way up from cabin boy to captain, Joshua Slocum wrecked his ship off the coast of Brazil. Turning this catastrophe to his advantage, he built a sailing canoe from the wreckages, and sailed back to New York. Moreover, he wrote Voyage of the Liberdad a chronicle of his trip, and earned some literary success. This was the spur to attempt his perilous voyage!

About the Author, Captain Joshua Slocum

Captain Joshua Slocum (1844–1909) was the first person to circle the globe alone entirely by sea. On April 24, 1895, he departed Boston in his 37-foot sloop, Spray, and sailed around the world, returning to Newport, Rhode Island, on June 27, 1898. This remarkable achievement made Slocum the most famous North American sailor of all time.
