Overview

In this broad introduction to saltmarsh ecology, emphasis is placed on geographical diversity of saltmarsh vegetation and on the ecophysiological mechanisms that permit tolerance to the major challenges of high, but variable, soil salinities and of frequently waterlogged soils. The importance of saltmarshes as functioning ecosystems is discussed and issues relevant to the long-term conservation and management of saltmarshes are considered. The book differs from other texts on saltmarsh ecology in its broad geographic scope and in its attempt to relate modern physiological information to ecological questions.
