Gr 4-9 McCarthy gives an unbiased view of Saudi Arabia in this clearly written introduction. He discusses briefly the history and geography of the country. There are plenty of facts, including an appendix which presents the Arabic alphabet. The strength of the book, however, is the discussion of Saudi society. McCarthy discusses family life, sports, language, shopping, holidays, food, marriage and family outings. Scattered throughout the book are anecdotes, legends and even a recipe. The book is illustrated with color and black-and-white photos, although several of the color photos appear blurry and out of focus. An acceptable choice for libraries needing material on the Middle East. Judith L. Olson, Lansdowne-Emrath Library, Lexington, Ky.Book Details
