Children's Literature - Kathleen Foucart

Savion Glover is a wonderful choice for a biography. His talent, hard work, and determination show through his accomplishments, making him an excellent role model for children of any age. Unfortunately, this particular biography does not do Glover justice. Much of the information in the first chapter is superfluous and might turn children away from reading about Glover's fascinating life. An example of this occurs on the first page where there is a long list of musicians playing for Glover's show. But then the significance of those particular musicians is never mentioned again, leaving one to wonder why they were included in the first place. Also, there are many quotes from reviews of Glover's performances, but little in the way of explaining their relevance, even when words that might be unfamiliar to children in the intended age group are used. The brightest spots of this book are the quotations from Glover himself, which show his enthusiasm for his work. However, the student who wants to do a report about Savion Glover perhaps would be better served reading his autobiography, My Life in Tap.
