Synopsis

Mother shares a book about love while Brother shares a book about friendship. Next Aunt Grace shares a book about adventure. Everyone in this family is eager to share books and have the newest member's affection and attention. But all kidding aside, this family knows the bond that is created when reading aloud with someone you love.

When Daddy closed the last page, he smiled at me for hours and said, 'Say Daddy! Say Daddy!' He hoped that would be my first word!

But wait. Did we hear correctly? 'Book,' I said. 'Book!'

Children's Literature

On the day the baby was born, he was welcomed into the world with tears of joy and his very first book. His mother read about kindness and caring and whispered, "Say, Mommy!" because she hoped "Mommy" would be her baby's first word. Daddy read too, about dreams and wishes. When he closed the last page, he whispered "Say, Daddy!" because he hoped "Daddy" would be his baby's first word. Big Brother read, and so did Aunt Grace and Uncle Roy. Grandma read about families and how they celebrate joys and hug tears away. And each, when the last page was read, whispered their name and hoped that would be the baby's first word. But that oh-so-important first word was a surprise to everyone! A sweet book to read aloud to young children, this is heartwarming, full of love and with just a bit of humor, as in this passage: "When Uncle Roy closed the last page he tossed me high in the air, laughed and said, `Say, Uncle! Say, Uncle!' He hoped Uncle would be my first word. I just smelled funny. He gave me back to Mom." The, soft watercolor illustrations complement the text nicely. The book jacket lists the many benefits of reading to your child as well as several read-aloud tips. Reviewer: Anita Barnes Lowen
