Overview

O'Brien (English, comparative literature, Chapman U., Orange, California) takes as his theme cataclysmic events to which the authors have "said yes to that lightning by writing of it." This theme is examined through a comparative and close reading of a group of long poems either in English or Russian by Hart Crane, Gerard Manley Hopkins, H.D., Perdita Schaffner, William Carlos Williams, Steven Broyde and Nadezhda Mandelstam. The result is a rich excursus on the use of language to express violence and upheaval. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
