Synopsis

The issue of school violence is all over the media. In the past, most students thought school was a safe place to go. Now with the shootings in Littleton, Colorado, teens are fearful that they too will become victims of violence. In School Violence: Deadly Lessons, Francha Roffe Menhard recounts some of the violent events that have plagued the educational system. She explains why teens act out violently and discusses ways students, parents, and teachers can avoid incidents.

Gr 6 Up-Using events at Columbine High School as her introductory focus, Menhard describes the problem and the role that the media and the availability of weapons and drugs have in it. Providing statistics about the frequency of incidents, the author gives an accounting of the human as well as the financial cost of school violence. She indicates that bullying is probably the most prevalent form and offers concrete advice on how to deal with it. The text also covers hate crimes, fights, sexual violence, harassment, bomb threats, and the use of weapons on campus. Menhard urges students to become involved in programs that have been known to work effectively such as crime stoppers, teen court, and peer mediation. A list of such programs and the pertinent data necessary for readers to make contact is included, as is a list of agencies that can provide help for teens. Captioned black-and-white photographs appear throughout. This title is similar in scope to Gus Gedatus's Violence at School (Capstone, 2000). Students who require more comprehensive information on the subject can refer to Bryan J. Grapes's School Violence (Greenhaven, 2000).-Sylvia V.
