Library Journal
An annotated bibliography of secondary sources in the genre, this book serves well as a guide to the select audience of libraries that have reference sections on science fiction and fantasy literature. Because he has personally studied all 300 works he annotates, Justice offers an accurate and honest assessment of each. The book is very well organized, breaking the works into nine categories, then cross-referencing and indexing for easy access. His ``Core Collection Checklist'' suggests key works to own, depending on the commitment the library has to the genre. Science fiction and fantasy are moving out of the realm of pop culture into accepted literature. For those libraries dedicated to referencing the genre, this book is an excellent aid.-- Martin J. Hudacs, Towanda H.S., Pa.Booknews
Devoted exclusively to listing and evaluating reference books in this genre, this bibliography covers some 300 titles. Each book description includes names of contributors, a list of essays or articles where applicable, subject matter emphasis, original publication date. Annotations contain critical evaluations: an indication of "usability," warnings about structural defects (lack of an index, other omissions, etc.) Many of the annotations have specific recommendations about acquisition (a standard reference, a supplement, or an outdated/superseded reference source). Appendices offer listings and evaluations of critical and bibliographical book series and a suggested core collection checklist. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)Book Details
