Readers theatre, with its emphasis on working with a written, unmemorized text and minimal costumes and settings, is an ideal way both to bring ideas to life and to bridge to actual dramatic performance. Science fiction, with its appeal to both the factual and quantifiable and its futuristic, novelistic subject matter, is the perfect venue for integrating science and literacy. In this well-thought-out and attractively presented collection of nineteen finished readers theatre scripts and one "do-it-yourself" template, drama, story, and science combine to create thought-provoking experiences for both the actors and the audience. The scripts, which vary in length from six to ten pages of fourteen-point type, fall into five categories: Distant Worlds, Distant Planets; Creatures, Real and Otherwise; Goos, Brews, and Aliens Too; Search for Knowledge; and Future World. Each script takes an aspect of life in the future and explores it in thought-provoking and well-phrased ways. From Once Upon A Time, which tells the story of the first Martian landing on Earth to Forever Is A Long Time, which explores the downside of immortality, the scripts have child appeal and read aloud well. The vocabulary is just challenging enough to be interesting, but simple enough to be relatively easy to read. Each script begins with a brief introduction and notes on staging and ends with three or four suggestions for extension-writing, experimenting, or doing further acting. A detailed introduction defines readers theatre, lists the values of the exercise, makes presentation suggestions, and discusses script preparation, how to introduce readers theatre to your students, staging, props, delivery, and post-presentationdiscussion. A thorough resource section at the end lists books, sources for scripts, and Web sites. Aimed at middle school students, this resource is ideal for those just starting out in readers theatre as well as those who need solid, interesting scripts to add to the repertoire. Illus.
