Overview

This book presents experiments that deal with the surrounding atmosphere, soil, water, plants, and climate. The experiments use simple and inexpensive materials that are available around the home or school. Safety warnings appear throughout the book when applicable to the particular experiments. Most experiments are great starts for science fair projects and fill the need for more challenging experiments for junior and senior high students.

Presents experiments and projects suitable for science fairs, dealing with such aspects of the environment and ecology as the atmosphere, soil, water, plants, animals, and climate.

School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-These volumes offer a wide range of experiments from the easy to the complex. Each project is clearly outlined with a list of generally available supplies. The texts are concise and informative, but dry. Questions to be considered for further research are also included. Warnings are issued in bold print and readers are reminded to work under adult supervision when an activity poses potential risks. Each book contains an excellent table of contents enumerating the experiments and starring those (over half) that are appropriate for science fairs. Black-and-white line drawings, tables, and charts complement the explanations. Some of the information in the first title is duplicated in Gardner's Science Projects about Chemistry (Enslow, 1994) and Kitchen Chemistry (Messner, 1989), but this volume presents greater detail. Although it's not as much fun as Vicki Cobb's Science Experiments You Can Eat (HarperCollins, 1994), it includes some new material. While Thomas R. Rybolt's Environmental Experiments about Life (Enslow, 1993; o.p.) is more accessible, Science Projects about the Environment and Ecology has twice as many activities and a lot more background information. Both of these new titles would be solid additions to any collection.-Maren Ostergard, Bellevue Regional Library, WA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
