Gr 8-12-- A tone of consciousness-raising runs through this collection of activities that dovetail the title topics; the author's underlying mission is to make students aware that science and technology should not continue to speed along without consideration for their effects on society. Thorough and analytical descriptions of projects dealing with the environment, recycling, energy, population, agriculture, land and water use, solid waste, and food and nutrition are clearly presented for an audience with some scientific sophistication. Conversational directions help with the initial shaping of each study, in combination with suggested questions to act on for further development. Because many of the proposals involve the use of dangerous materials, warnings are repeated throughout with comments to consult an ``adult partner'' regarding the procedures. Many books have been written on each of the topics dealt with here, but the uniqueness of this volume is its bringing together so many timely issues and offering independent activities for investigation. A bibliography offers ample suggestions for further reading in all areas. The consistent idea that humans are responsible for the problems described gives added purpose; readers are urged to think creatively as they plan and execute their work. A worthwhile addition where there is a curricular need. --Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJBook Details
