Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer

An introduction describes the difference between arachnids and crustaceans. Detailed diagrams with appropriate labels show every aspect of the scorpion from both the outside and inside. The stages of the scorpion's metamorphosis include egg, immature or scorpling, and adult. Scorpions differ from most other arachnids in that they carry their young inside their bodies and have live births. The baby scorpions then live on their mother's back until they are able to survive on their own. Scorpions inject venom from a stinger which aids in attacking prey and in escaping from enemies. The description of the mating process is accompanied by an informative photograph. Insets in octagonal shapes appear frequently offering facts that supplement the text. Extraordinary enlarged photographs depict every aspect of the scorpion's existence. The back matter includes information about other armed defenders, a glossary, a bibliography, an index, and directions for a learning activity related to the sensitive hairs on the scorpion's body. A good reference source for upper elementary and middle school students. "Arachnid World" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
