Synopsis
Hinkel (Seattle U.) presents the findings of a large-scale study of differences between the writing of university-level native and non- native speakers of English. She analyzes the frequency of use of 68 syntactic, lexical and rhetorical features from essays written by advanced non-native speakers (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Arabic) compared with essays written by native speakers in first-year composition courses. Hinkel suggests ways in which ESL writing instructors might focus attention on particular features to better guide non-native speakers' understanding of the conventions of American academic writing. For ESL and EFL teachers and researchers, teacher-trainers, curriculum designers, material developers, applied linguists, graduate students in applied linguistics. Annotation c.
