Synopsis
More than three quarters of all land animals fly, from butterflies and birds to beetles and bats. Some birds can stay airborne for hours with only an occasional flap of their wings, flies can hover and perform split-second turns, while bats can execute their precise maneuvers in total darkness. How do they do it? Find out the secrets of animal flight - the principles that keep fliers as different as ladybugs and eagles aloft. And discover some puzzles that scientists haven't yet been able to solve - nature's mysteries of flight.
Nic Bishop, who holds a doctorate in the biological sciences, is an award-winning author and photographer known for his outstanding stop-action wildlife photographs. He lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with his wife and a bevy of animals under study.
Children's Literature
Exciting prints of high-speed photographs of various animals in flight and an obvious in-depth knowledge on the part of the author are two redeeming qualities of this non-fiction title, but several flaws will prevent this book from being as useful as it could have been. With neither an index nor even a table of contents, actually getting to the facts presented is difficult. The descriptive information included is straightforward and factual, supplying simple yet complete explanations of the elements of animal flight, but the maturity level necessary for readers to follow the text may actually be somewhat above the format of the book itself.
