Synopsis
Review Books about lighthouses are always popular, and I have read many of them. However, this book is the best I've ever seen and includes beautiful pen and ink sketches. the author, Elinor DeWire, has been involved with lighthouses for more than 20 years, has published many other books and magazine articles, and is a frequent guest speaker. You may have seen her on television or heard her on radio. The books begins witht he early lighthouses and goes on to cover present-day lights. DeWire covers each lighthouse in detail, including a sketch and any interesting incidents surrounding its history. She relates stories about lighthouse keepers and their families. Many lighthouse keepers were female, and many of those were widows of previously appointed lighthouse keepers, a practice that began before the American Revolution. DeWire covers many, many lighthouses and provides lots of great stories and interesting details to enjoy about each. As a lighthouse aficionado, I! learned something new from every page and plan to reread "Sentries Along the Shore" soon. (Reviewed by Robert R. Rosenfeld) -- The Ensign, December 1999 Product Description This is a collection of 50 articles and column installments about lighthouses that have appeared in print over the past twenty years. The topics are varied and engaging, presenting a broad picture of lighthouse history in the U.S. from the Colonial Period to present-day. About the Author Same as above.Book Details
