School Library Journal
K-Gr 2 A collection of poems geared to the school calendar that includes seasonal poems as well as poems to be used in teaching about science, feelings, values, and for just plain fun. The book is arranged by month with special subjects, such as senses and animals, and is illustrated with bright photographs that have a dated quality to them and corner designs representing each subject. The verses often read like older basal readers. Most of the poems follow the a,b,a,b, rhyme scheme, many times stretching for rhymes, such as ``. . .brave and fine. /. . . /In 1789'' or ``The way you oughtayou can't do that with water.'' With so many excellent poetry collections for children, such as Prelutsky and Lobel's Random House Book of Poetry for Children (1983), and as most of them have good subject indexes, this title is not a needed purchase.
