In this beautiful book of fashion photographs, the subject is hair, though you might not guess it at first glance. Normant (Femme Fatale), a hair stylist who works with the world's top models and actresses, divides the text into four sections: the personally revealing nature of portraiture, retro styles drawn from film and popular culture, fine art, and "Over the Top," which reveals fashion ranging from exoticism to science fiction. Julia Roberts adorns the cover and contributes the foreword, and the pages are filled with such notables as Susan Sarandon, Kate Moss, Julianne Moore, and Sharon Stone. Among the photographers included are Herb Ritts, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and Karl Lagerfeld. Throughout, Normant seduces the viewer with twists on familiarity, such as posing supermodel Shalom Harlow as Isabella Rossellini's character from Blue Velvet or Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah Bernhardt from Nadar's famous portrait. Normant considers himself an artist, and these photographs testify to his remarkable talent. While not essential, this book is recommended for libraries that collect popular culture and fashion photography.
