Overview

Learn solutions to everyday problems in the publishing and acquisition of serials in an area far removed from much of the major serials publishing industry. Unlike Americans and Europeans, who have strong local serials publishing industries, Australians purchase up to eighty percent of their titles from overseas. Australians are farther away from their overseas publishers, deliveries are slow, claims are not easily fulfilled, and costs are high. This book brings together a diverse group of significant Australian publishers, serials agents, and serials librarians to discuss how they solve these problems in Australia. Authors give a different emphasis to problems than do their northern counterparts, as serials acquisition and publishing ”down under” often face unique difficulties and inconveniences.

The authors, writing from a variety of perspectives, address topics of relevance to Australian as well as non-Australian readers. Some of the issues they discuss are:

  • education for serials librarianship
  • Australian serials librarian/agent relationships
  • subscription agencies in Australia
  • country of origin purchasing
  • tenders and quotes
  • document delivery

An informative guide, Serials Publishing and Acquisitions in Australia helps Australian librarians and others in the Australian serials industry understand what has happened in their serials world and where it is heading. American and European publishers and serials agents will better understand the needs of Australian serials librarians and how to respond to such needs, while serials librarians in America and Europe discover how their colleagues across the globe handle serials acquisitions.
