Overview

"Shakespeare Adaptations from the Restoration is the first edition since the seventeenth century (apart from facsimiles) of five Restoration versions of Shakespeare that appeared during the turbulent years of the Popish Plot and the Exclusion crisis." The edition is intended to provide a fully informative text for both general and academic readers, and the edition bears the needs of both groups in mind. The Introduction is intended first to be informative for those who may have little prior knowedge of the events that led from civil war to the Restoration, the nature of Restoration stages, and the fate of Shakespeare on them. This introductory material is followed by a critical account of the five plays, focusing attention on the effect of linguistic alterations of Shakespeare.
