Description:This book fills an important niche in veterinary books, as there are few complete texts that cover medical diseases of either sheep or goats. The book's 24 authors contribute 17 chapters.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a source of information on sheep and goat medicine, surgery, nutrition, and theriogenology in an easy to use format. These are worthy objectives since this information cannot be found in a single volume elsewhere. This book meets author?s objectives, although some areas are covered in more depth than others.
Audience:The book is designed to be a reference covering medical conditions of sheep and goats for any veterinary or animal science professional. It is suitable for any practitioner or veterinary student needing a reference for sheep and goat medicine. It is understandable enough that some chapters may serve as a detailed source of information for knowledgeable owners.
Features:A wide range of physiologic, pathologic, and reproductive conditions during all phases of life are covered. A limited number of surgical procedures are also included. Chapters on feeding and nutrition and flock health are particularly useful as this information is difficult to find elsewhere. Each chapter contains tables, charts, and figures that greatly enhance the written material. Most of the chapters contain neatly organized tables that summarize important portions of the chapter such as treatment protocols and drug options and doses. The three appendixes -- commonly used drugs, practical fluid therapy, and normal values and conversions -- are orderly and provide useful information in a quick, easy to understand format. The book has very few shortcomings. Depending on the user's knowledge level, some information may be too simplistic. However, this book does provide complete information in a format and understanding level to suit a broad range of potential users.
Assessment:This is a good book for practitioners and veterinary students alike. It may also serve as a good source of information for knowledgeable owners. This book is unique in its field as there are no others that cover both sheep and goat medicine as thoroughly.
