Synopsis

While the rest of her family sleeps, a young girl takes her little brother-whom she knows will be frightened by the windstorm raging around their seaside house-on an imaginary voyage with his favorite animal, the humpback whale. The bed lifts and the waters welcome them as they embark on an undersea odyssey to swim and breach with the gentle creature who rocks them gently to sleep in a rumbling, shimmering hammock made of waves.

Debra Briatico - Children's Literature

From the award-winning creators of Grandpa Loved and Grandma's Scrapbook, comes the newly revised version of a beautiful bedtime lullaby. In this charming tale, an older sister shows kindness and affection for her younger brother when she comforts him one night during a terrible windstorm. With soothing words and reassuring hugs, she works like a master storyteller and quickly quells the young boy's fears. As her rhythms fill the air, the pair embarks on a magical journey to a fantasy underwater world, where they plunge beneath the ocean's surface and swim with a gentle whale and other sea creatures. During their adventure, they twirl and whirl, dance and sway, and laugh and play. As the whale smiles and sings his song, the two children are transported to an enchanting place where their fears and worries no longer control their thoughts. By the end of this delightful story, the young boy is nestled in his warm bed fast asleep, oblivious to the storm outside his window, with his loving sister by his side. This wonderful picture book is the perfect antidote for those stormy nights when children's imaginations tend to run wild. It's a great bedtime read-aloud for young children. 2000 (orig. 1992), Gingerbread House,
