Overview

Steve Smith is one of the best shotgunners in the country, an avid bird hunter, and a keen dog man. I have hunted with Steve many times and observed his ability to make difficult shots on game birds. I asked Steve to write a book on shotguns - to give us his views, opinions, and advice on guns for the wingshooter. Steve covers a variety of shooting techniques, including making doubles, why we miss, what constitutes good shooting, and shooting as athletics. A section on guns includes coverage of favorite gauges; the complete battery; thoughts on chokes, double triggers, trigger pulls and flinching; and buying a new or used gun. Regarding dogs, Steve talks about matching up dogs with guns and how to shoot over them, among other subjects. Steve also takes you to some of his favorite hunting spots near and far, from the grouse covers of the Midwest to the quail fields of the South, and to the Western prairies and the Canadian north after ducks and geese; all of the stories have a sprinkling of gun advice.

Synopsis

Steve Smith is the author of over a dozen previous titles, including the popular Just Labs, and is one of the best known writers in the outdoor field. He currently edits several national magazines, including Pointing Dog Journal and Retriever Journal. He is also a consummate sportsman and shares his views, opinions, and advice on wingshooting in this volume. The gun section includes coverage of favorite gauges, the complete battery, chokes, double triggers, trigger pulls and flinching, and tips on buying a new or used gun. Steve talks about matching dogs with guns and how to shoot over dogs, among other topics, in the dog section. And he also takes the readers with him to some of his favorite hunting spots near and far, from the grouse covers of the Midwest to the quail fields of the South, and to the Western prairies and Canadian north after ducks and geese. Smith is also an adept humorist who sees the funny side of the hunting life. One of the stories in this section that concerns Steve and his wife discussing the cost of an upcoming wedding vs. the purchase of a Parker gun ranks with some of the best sporting humor in print.
