Overview

This reference guide to the artillery guns still standing on the site of the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg is designed to be used while actually touring the battlefield and in conjunction with the National Park's own tour guide (available at the site). Before presenting the tour, the author gives an overview of General Lee's campaign in Pennsylvania, a brief history of Civil War artillery and how it worked, select photographs, and quotations from artillerymen that fought in the battle. After the tour, he presents a section of Gettysburg artillery trivia, as well as five appendices providing information on the organization and losses of the artillery arms of the Union and Confederate armies, listings of batteries by state, tables of numbers of guns by type and casualties by brigade/battalion, several official reports taken from the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, and biographies of officers. Distributed in the US by Casemate. Annotation Β©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
