Description: Comprehensive student textbooks with this depth of knowledge can be hard to find in forensics. This is the 12th edition of an influential book that was first published in 1947.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a clear and accurate foundation in forensic medicine. This worthy objective is met by the author.
Audience: "This book would be a valuable addition in any medical or legal library and would be valuable to students, physicians, investigators, police officers, and lawyers. The author is a well recognized authority in the field. "
Features: The book covers a tremendous amount of ground in 196 pages. There is no wasted space and the material is faithfully covered. The first chapters are valuable and discuss law and ethics and their relationship to medicine. These chapters also give pointers on preparing documentation and giving court testimony. The middle portion of the book deals with the examination of wounds, the different types and effects of injuries, identification and the use of DNA, blood stain analysis, and natural causes of death. Other topics covered include sexual offenses, pregnancy and abortion, human rights, and death and injury in infancy. The last portion of the book is dedicated to an overview of toxicology. The book contains lots of high quality photographs and is reasonably priced. The chapters are concise and well written. It is a complete introduction to the multiple areas of forensic medicine and sets a sound foundation for further study.
Assessment: This book would be a valuable addition in any medical or legal library.
