In these titles, the authors present the history, cultural links, and vocabulary associated with a good scare. In Martians , Nardo walks readers through everything from early astronomical observations of the Red Planet to Martians in the movies and on television. His writing is clear, informative, and often humorous. These are qualities sorely lacking in Sirens and The Sphinx . With long, odd tangents and poor, unfocused writing, they leave readers unsatisfied. Even the photographs, which are well chosen and kitschy in Martians , miss the mark here.-Tracy H.
