Overview
Raised on a mountainside, Jenna learned the arts of the warrior, and from the mountain women the magic of the ancient lore. But the greatest magic of all was her ability to call forth her dark sister from the depths of the mirror of the land of light and shadow.
Skada was the dark one, able to exist only when the moonlight cast a shadow or lamplight flickered in a darkened room.
This is the story of Jenna and Skada. Sister Light and Sister Dark.

Yolen's imaginary world has an elaborate history, with mythology and legend woven seamlessly into the narrative. Each chapter begins with "the myth," which seems to be the story as the modern world sees it, then "the legend," which explains the myth in modern terms. Then comes "the story"—what actually happened. During the "legend" sections, Yolen introduces modern scholarship, complete with conflicts and infighting as the scholars disagree on everything except the fact that no one is actually sure of anything, so there is a great need for further study. Remember that this all happened a very long time ago. For fans, this is a great read. But it is not an introduction to the genre. And even for fans the end is quite disturbing. 2004 (orig. 1988), TOR, Ages 13 up.—Judy Silverman

Jane Yolen writes with an unstilted simplicity, in a classical voice that never impinges on the reader's consciousness. Her plainness of language is deceptive; its very clarity is like a crystal ball's, concealing even as it reveals...a very gifted writer.Locus
