Kirkus Reviews

Four African-American sorority sisters and a deep, dark (ho-hum) secret. Jessica, Shereen, Ellie, and Yolanda were the Fabulous Four at Howard University: inseparable then, and, ten years later, still very much a part of each others' lives. Jessica hosts a TV talk show and is happily married to Douglas, a producer. Douglas wants a baby but Jessica, at a turning point in her career, isn't sure she's ready. She's agreed to try but is secretly on the Pill. Ellie is getting over an affair with a married man and making ends meet as a movie extra. Shereen is still single, fed up with men at the moment, overwhelmed, and working overtime as a financial manager for her father's design company. Yolanda is a lawyer, now divorced, in love with a mystery man. The others can't wait to meet him-and, yo, he turns out to be Shereen's old flame Terrence. Hearing that Yolanda and Terrence have plans to marry infuriates Shereen, who slaps Yolanda hard enough to knock her down. The faithful sisterhood shrugs this off as payback for some long-ago insult back at college. And speaking of payback: Years ago, Jessica fell in love with one of her professors, not knowing he was married and got pregnant. Then the prof killed himself when she decided to charge him with rape. The whole affair has come back to haunt her: someone's been sending threatening letters-plus the professor's old love letters-to Jessica, who turns to her loyal girlfriends for help, since they stood by her even then. Jessica hadn't wanted to have an abortion. Shereen, Ellie, and Yolanda pointed out that the professor lied to her and took advantage of her innocence, and they encouraged her to charge him-but then Jessica eventually miscarried. Sowho's out to get her now? The answer will surprise no one. Routine story, pat resolution, interchangeable characters: a buppie soap opera from first-timer Perrin.
