Skating on cross-country skis is a relatively new technique favored by racers and other enthusiasts who prefer its speed and grace to the classic Nordic stride. Although it can be practiced on traditional equipment (but not no-wax skis), skiers can greatly enhance their performance by switching to shorter skis and longer poles designed specifically for diagonal gliding. The author ably explains how beginners can become adept at ski-skating and covers strategies for training and entering races. A good book for interested novices who aren't yet ready or willing to tackle the advanced instruction in Audun Endestad and John Teaford's Skating for Cross-Country ( LJ 1/87).
