...designed for virtually every medical specialist who will find substantial contributions to understanding and clinical practice.Dawn M. Carlson
This is the second edition of a multiauthored monograph that covers the current knowledge of sleep-related breathing disorders. The first was published 10 years ago. The aim is to summarize current knowledge in this field and integrate basic science and clinical medicine. A comprehensive update such as this book is needed; this is a very active area of both basic and clinical investigations into syndromes that are very common. The authors meet their goals of a nonencyclopedic review of the latest information. The audience for which the book is intended is primarily sleep disorder specialists. The text is certainly written at a level appropriate for this audience. It would probably also interest sleep technologists. The editors and the authors of this text are very well-established experts in the field of sleep-related breathing disorders. The book contains an appropriate number of illustrations, in the form of tables, graphs, and photographs. The figures used to represent various points are clear and well-labeled. The extensive references are up-to-date and include the pertinent articles. The bibliography is very complete. The table of contents is well organized into concise topics, which makes the large volume easy to use. All aspects of sleep and breathing are covered: from animal research to pathophysiology to the clinical evaluation and treatment of the disorders. A unique addition to this edition are color plates to demonstrate neurophysiologic findings from studies performed on cats. This second edition is a long-awaited and well-written review of the present knowledge in the rapidly expanding field of sleep disorders. The authors include the leading experts in this field.Practitioners and researchers in sleep disorders, from the multiple disciplines involved, will find this volume useful. The amount of knowledge gained in the last 10 years, when the previous edition was published, certainly justifies the presence of a second edition.Lung
