From The Critics

Reviewer: Karen L Campbell, DVM, MS, DACVIM, DACVD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This book is a one of a series of self-assessment picture texts in veterinary medicine. It contains questions on all aspects of skin disease in the dog and cat.
Purpose: There are more than 200 color photographs illustrating a wide variety of dermatological disorders and more than 500 questions designed to help students and practitioners test and improve their diagnostic skills.
Audience: This book will be an excellent review for students preparing for examinations. The index will facilitate the use of this book as a concise reference for practitioners to use in handling common dermatological diseases.
Features: The majority of the questions include a short case history and then quiz the reader in diagnostic and treatment options for the patient. Answers to the questions are found in the back of the book. The discussions include brief reviews of differential diagnosis, prognosis, and possible treatment-related complications.
Assessment: The discussions in this text are brief and therefore do not provide the detailed information required for the management of the more complicated skin diseases. The answer section of the book reflects the experience and recommendations of the author, some of which are controversial. This book is unique among veterinary dermatology texts, the only one that uses a question and answer format. It will be an excellent resource for veterinarians to use in self-assessment but it should not be used as a primary reference book for small animal dermatology.
