Library Journal

A large body of work charting the ins and outs of small business operation has recently emerged, perhaps reflecting the vital role small businesses play in the nation's economy. Day, a consultant, offers practical advice for those looking to start a business or improve the management of an existing one. He covers important concepts, such as developing a business plan, raising capital, utilizing effective management techniques, and dealing with the realities of possible failure. He also discusses such nuts-and-bolts issues as preparing financial statements and getting outside assistance. Unfortunately, Day is often short on specifics. For example, he devotes little space to a discussion of tax strategies, and the implications of bankruptcy are given cursory treatment. More comprehensive books available include Gary Brenner and others' The Complete Handbook for the Entrepreneur (Prentice Hall, 1990).-- M. Uri Toch, P.L. of Cincinnati & Hamilton Cty.
