This title in the "Looking at Small Mammals" series examines the small cat. Small cats are defined as house cats on the smallest end and the cougar as the largest of the 28 different types of small cat. The book covers cat habitats, feeding and hunting habits, appearance, communication and caring for their young. This is an excellent book for readers who are moving beyond rookie readers but not yet ready for text-heavy non-fiction. The print is large and the sentence structure is simple, but the book still packs in a lot of information. The large number of photographs will also entice readers. At the end, the reader is asked to investigate further, with directions for simple observation-based activities. A short list of cat facts is provided, which is probably superfluous. Also included are a table of contents, a glossary and an index. A very good addition to any library. 2004, Chrysalis Education, Ages 6 to 12.βSharon Oliver
