Social scientists from the University of Liverpool and Shanghai University report part of the findings from a large scale project they undertook in three small towns during the middle and late 1990s. The typical , officially designated town, is a center urban core surrounded by a rural territory with a number of administrative villages and smaller settlements. Their subjects of study are Neiguan in poor northwestern Gansu, Yuantan in southern Anhui, and Shengze in coastal Jiangsu. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
