Overview

This latest volume to appear in the Index of Middle English Phrase services surveys the prose to be found in six smaller collections of the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford: English miscellaneous, English poetry, English theology, Latin theology. Lyell, and the Radcliffe Trust. The manuscripts covered include the largest in Middle English, the Vernon manuscript, Eng. poet. a1. Hanna catalogues a wealth of interesting material, texts on astronomy and heraldry, macaronic sermons, Lollard tracts, and a heretofore unnoticed fragment of Love's Mirror. A lengthy critical introduction assesses the importance of Vernon as a record of religious prose, and discusses the generation of Middle English devotional prose for the traditional instruction of enclosed women and for parochial instruction.
