Children's Literature

David Carter who is the author, artist, paper engineer and creative force behind more than twenty pop-up bug books is one of the world's outstanding paper engineers. This little book for little hands has nine double page spreads with nine different ways to delight its readers. All of the pages have plain white backgrounds. The recto, or right side page, of every spread has the pop-up and the verso has a few simple sentences. On the first page, "It's a snowy day today. Let's go out and play. Who's outside the window?" The opposite page has a yellow window through which you can see a gray sky and a snow-covered landscape. There is an icicle dripping outside at the top of the window and is that a bug's eye? Opening the window flap from the right side reveals a Thermometer Bug with its red mercury dropping as the window opens. On the following page a closet door opens to reveal winter clothing that is fun to touch and on the next page, a giant snowball can be opened to show a family of Snowflake Bugs, each one different. There are Snow Bugs ice skating, sledding, snowboarding, and having snow ball battles; and on the very last page there is a Snowman Bug so large that you wonder how he can fold back into the book. None of the actions work in exactly the same way so every page is a surprise. Some are more complicated than others, but all will bring a smile. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
