Children's Literature

Early readers are moving in several directions¾now we have the "Read-and-Do" series. New readers can enjoy the simple text and also enjoy the hands-on activities. Some will probably require assistance—just reading the directions may be well beyond the level of kindergartners. Minky and his friend Mouse provide instructions for making various paper snowflakes, holiday flowers, and other crafts related to winter. The text imparts some factual information, such as every snowflake has six sides, and squirrels eat nuts that they stored underground before the snow came, but mostly the text just guides readers to the activities. The collage illustrations are a delight, and teachers, parents and other caregivers will enjoy them as much as their charges. Kids will probably require adult assistance to complete the crafts, and the biggest audience for this book may well be teachers and parents. A Level 2 book in the "Hello Reader" series targeted to kindergarten through grade 2, which also has a page of advice for family members so they can help young readers. 2000, Cartwheel/Scholastic, . Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
