Overview

Snowbird Secrets: A Guide to Big Mountain Skiing is "a collection of lessons learned by skiing big mountains, as taught by big mountains." It reveals how this 3-ring resort is affected by wind, weather and exposure and how, in turn, this knowledge informs one's choice of descent down its multi-faceted terrain. The 22 chapters take readers on a tour of this gigantic winter playground, in the process sharing the secrets to mastering the mountain.

Even elite expert skiers will discover perspectives they may have experienced and been unable to express. Mike Rogan, the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) National Alpine Team Captain and the living embodiment of the perfect turn, notes, "Nowhere else will you understand the white dance as inside these scrolls. You will not be a complete Alpine Slider until you finish this book."

Secrets is like a backstage pass to an arena concert; its authors, Jackson Hogen and "Guru" Dave Powers, make you feel the beating pulse that invests every run down these natural amphitheaters with the invisible energy of the gravity stream. No other book on skiing has illuminated the concept of flow with such vivid examples, drawn from two lifetimes devoted to skiing in sync with the mountain. "Secrets is about flowing into the zone, be it the athletic performance zone or the Zone of Life. It should be required reading for all students... and their instructors," says the creator of the cutting-edge Clendenin Ski Method (CSM) and 2-time World Freestyle Champion John Clendenin.

Whether you're already a master of the mountain or one who aspires to be, Secrets has countless lessons intertwined between its covers. You'll learn the advantages of being early in the turn, of drifting instead of carving and taking what the mountain gives you. "Snowbird Secrets applies to all skiing," observes the prime mover behind expertskier.com, Peter Keelty, "from the local bunny hill to the vast reaches of the Chugash. We believe it to be among the most important skiing books ever written. In our opinion, Secrets is must reading for anyone serious about skiing. Moreover, Secrets is a cracking good read."

About the Author, Jackson Hogen

Jackson Hogen has played more roles in the ski trade than Eskimos have words for snow: ski designer, binding and boot product manager, freestyle competitor, retail salesman, lecturer on risk management, ski instructor, marketing director, resort feature writer, ski tester for 25 years and boot tester for 20, OLN and RSN television show host, extreme camp ski coach, Desperate Measures co-creator, 4X Warren Miller screenwriter, R&D chief, honorary Canadian, college racer, 2X personal therapist to Greg Stump, regular contributor to at least ten different ski magazines (whore), and in his guise as Pontiff of Powder, married Paul Hochman and Carrie Sheinberg in all ways but legally.

The mountain called “Guru” Dave Powers here in 1976 and he’s plumbed its slopes for an average of 130 days a season ever since. The Goo doesn’t just understand every aspect of Snowbird’s constantly changing conditions; he lives them. He shares his knowledge in a daily blog, www.gurudavepowers.com with tens of thousands of adherents. Powers has a gift for seeing connections most of us ignore, a talent he has applied to deepening his 36-year relationship with this mountain. Snowbird Secrets draws on Powers’ detailed experience of every millimeter of this mountain while it illuminates the themes that forever bind him here.

Editorials

SKI Magazine - Berne Broudy

In Secrets, Hogen and Powers blend their philosophical reflection, near-religious zeal, technical mastery of the sport, a deep understanding of nature's power, and a how-to map for reading any mountain and present it in words that are nearly as satisfying and engaging as the experience of gliding on snow itself.

skidoctor.com - John Clendenin

Snowbird Secrets is neither ‘how-to’ book--although there is much it teaches--nor ski book even though it’s about skiing. It's not even really about Snowbird, yet captures the essence of America's iconic big mountain. Secrets is really about flowing into the zone, be it the athletic performance zone or the Zone of Life. It should be required reading for all students… and their instructors.

I could not even begin to place a number on the amount of times I found myself swaying left and right in my chair as if I was skiing along with each sentence. Truly mesmerizing is his literature… 5 out of 5 stars. I could hardly at times put my copy down. Even if you’ve only skied “The ‘Bird” once before and call any other mountain your home, this book is worth a read as many concepts can be universally applied.

Snowbird Secrets transcends the world of traditional technique/guiding and enters the metaphysical realm of communicating with the Alpine world. If you are willing and ready to listen to its fables, the mountain wants to share them. Hogen and Powers lend the reader a skeleton key to unlock the rhythm of the mountain and the secrets of Snowbird. Nowhere else will you understand the white dance as well as inside these scrolls. You won't be a complete Alpine Slider until you finish this book.

Secrets applies to all skiing from the local bunny hill to the vast reaches of the Chugach. Context, mental environment and especially the concept of Flow are as, if not more, important [than equipment and technique]. Secrets is the first volume of which we are aware to address these crucial concepts and we believe it to be among the most important skiing books yet written. In our opinion, Secrets is must reading for anyone serious about skiing. Moreover, Secrets is a cracking good read.
