School Library Journal

Gr 2-4 Marston, author of Big Rigs (1980) and Machines on the Farm (1982, both Dodd), turns her attention to the equipment necessary for snow removalequipment ranging from sidewalk scrapers to the ice breakers used to free trapped vessels on the Great Lakes. Giant snowblowers capable of removing 1750 tons of snow an hour, a snow blade attached to a motorcycle, and a snow-fighting school are sure to interest young residents of the snowbelt statesas well as those to whom snow is a novelty. The book is generously illustrated with black-and-white photographs that are sharp, clear, and helpful in conveying both the equipment described and the lovely, awesome quality of snow. Marston's obvious interest in her subject and her stylistic use of the second person to address readers is engaging. Her straightforward style is explicit and accessible.
